Chapter One: Home

Chapter One: HOME

The first chapter in my latest read, Letter To My Daughter, is about "home". The chapter may seem simple, but once you become intertwined with what one calls "home" things start to become more complex. Angelou describes home NOT being a geographical location, but a state of who we actually are as beings. She believes that we are all still children. She is "convinced that most people do not grow up. We find parking spaces and honor our credit cards. We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. We carry accumulation of years in our bodies and our faces, but generally our real selves, the children inside, are still innocent and shy as magnolias." Our minds may mature but our "youthful region" is our home. Who we are as children is who we originally are as "adults". When we are young we are what humans call "innocent" although as a Christian we know that we are all born sinners. But as we look at it from the human point of view, while we are innocent children we are honest, we are inquisitive, we are not lazy, we are not judgmental, we acknowledge no responsibility, we are genuine beings, and we are not complex. That is the beginning and that is "home". I believe that over time as we consider ourselves "adults" our environments water us down and we forget about "home" from time to time. I soooo get it!
